Monitoring Exposure to Hazardous Substances

According to Health & Safety Executive statistics, approximately 13,000 people per year die from exposure to hazardous substances at work and just 20% of this is due to historic exposure to asbestos. That is more than the number of passengers on 26 jumbo jets!

Employers have a duty under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 to control workplace exposures to hazardous substances.

The Health and Safety Executive have published a guidance document - EH40 Occupational Exposure Limits - containing an up-to-date list of occupational exposure limits for use in conjunction with these regulations.

How we can help

Our approach will be tailored to your individual requirements and circumstances.

In some cases it is necessary to measure the level of exposure to a hazardous substance either as part of a risk assessment procedure or, in some cases, to check the effectiveness of controls and whether exposure to substances exceed the permitted limits.

The consultant will also consider the uptake of chemicals not only by inhalation but also by skin absorption and ingestion. In the case of lead, ingestion can be a major route of exposure as can absorption through the skin with some other chemicals.
